THE LAW - As of 2003, you are legally bound to ensure that when your old car becomes an ELV (End of Life Vehicle), it is taken to an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF), where it will be de-polluted and recycled correctly. Scrap vehicles are now classified as hazardous waste and therefore must be disposed of in the correct manner. If not, the registered keeper risks a maximum penalty of a 20,000 fine and six months imprisonment. The final registered keeper must obtain a Certificate of Destruction to prove that the vehicle has been destroyed.
There are many un-authorised companies that may offer to take your car. They may even offer you cash in exchange for your car. But beware!! If the company is not a registered ATF you will not get a Certificate of Destruction. If the proper paperwork has not been done this may result in future fines!
